Professor Gregory E. Erhabor

Professor Gregory Efosa Erhabor is a distinguished medical professional with over three decades of dedicated service in respiratory medicine. He is a Professor of Medicine at Obafemi Awolowo University and the Head of the Chest Unit at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife. He founded the Asthma and Chest Care Foundation (ACCF) in 1997 to promote awareness, prevention, and management of lung diseases.

Achievements and Contributions

His passion for preventing and managing lung-related diseases through patient education and excellent medical care inspired the creation of the Asthma and Chest Care Foundation. Through this organization, he has been deeply involved in community outreach, promoting awareness of lung disease prevention and management, and empowering individuals to take control of their respiratory health.

His efforts have gained global recognition, earning him several prestigious awards, including the 'Making a Difference' Award by the American College of Chest Physicians in Philadelphia in 2008, and the Humanitarian Award in Asthma by the American College of Chest Physicians in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in 2012, among many other honors.

He is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP), American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP), and the Royal Colleges of Physicians in Edinburgh (FRCP Edin) and London (FRCP Lond). He is an Executive Committee Member of the Council of Global Governors of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) having served as an International Regent of the College for six years. Prof. Erhabor is one of the pioneering founders of the Pan-African Thoracic Society, former national delegate of the European Respiratory Society, former President of the Nigerian Thoracic Society (NTS) and former Chairman, STOP TB Nigeria. He served as the Vice-Chair of the Chronic Lung Disease division of International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (IUATLD) based in Paris for three years, having been the secretary and programme secretary for many years. He is a member of the British Thoracic Society and the American Thoracic Society till date.

Prof. Erhabor was former Chief Examiner and Internal Assessor, Faculty of Internal Medicine, West African College of Physicians. He was the Coordinator, West African College of Physicians Examinations (Internal Medicine) - Abuja Centre until 2022. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the West African Journal of Medicine, a journal comprising all physicians and surgeons in the West African sub-region. He was former Co-Editor-In-Chief of the African Journal of Respiratory Medicine, now Journal of the Pan-African Thoracic Society (JPATS). He is a member of many national and International Boards including being Advisory Board Member, Global Health Promotion on Community Health Promotion Strategies and Non-Communicable Diseases Control in Africa (2009) and Chairman of Advisory Board (Pfizer): The AFME Pneumococcal Adult (Vaccine).

He was External Program Evaluator, East Africa Training Initiative, Ethiopia (2018). He developed the World Health Organization (WHO) Document on Non-Communicable Respiratory Diseases in Africa and was part of the WHO Global MHealth Initiative on E-Health Research. He is the Key Resource Person, Omron Healthcare Respiratory Academy Training of Trainee, Hoofddorp, Netherlands, developed eight (8) modules of the Respiratory Training Curriculum and was facilitator and trainer in Netherlands. He is also the Key Resource Person, Omron Healthcare – Nigeria, developed the modules of Respiratory Training Curriculum in Nigeria, and facilitates the training nationwide. He is a Member of the 8-member Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award.

He has received numerous national and international awards including the British Thoracic Society (BTS) Award (1993. He is the Principal Investigator of the Sensation of breathlessness among asthmatics (Asthma Special Trustees United Bristol Hospital Grant); Co-PI, Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) Study I - Nigeria Centre (2010), and Principal Investigator, Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) Study II - Nigeria Centre (2018), amongst others.

Prof. Erhabor has supervised over thirty-four respiratory residents across the country who have successfully defended their part 2 dissertations and numerous postgraduate students for Master’s degrees. He is a well-published author who has written over one hundred and fifty (170) articles in peer-reviewed national and international journals. He has authored two respiratory textbooks - Pulmonary Function Tests: Spirometry and Peak Flow in Clinical Practice & Asthma: Basic Principles and Management Strategy and has published several information booklets on asthma, tuberculosis, and other chest diseases. He has been featured on major National Television Networks and Dailies on the prevention and management of lung diseases.
